Quad issue a factor in shelving of Justin Smoak

Justin Smoak had not started either of the first two games of the Mariners’ series with the Cardinals, and he was out of the lineup again for Sunday’s finale. Mariners manager Eric Wedge told MLB.com that Smoak was not only sitting because of the lack of a DH spot in a National League park, but also because he is dealing with a tight quad muscle.

Kendrys Morales has been starting at first base in the series, moving from his customary role as the Mariners’ designated hitter.
